Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Certificate In Risk Assessment: Principles & Practice

INTRODUCTION
This is a tutor-led course intended for managers, supervisors or all those responsible for undertaking risk assessments within their own workplace. It does not provide basic health & safety or occupational training. However, anyone should be able to relate the risk assessment techniques to their own workplace.

A minimum of eight hours teaching time is required and, it is anticipated, delegates will also need some revision time as well as time to complete the practical assessment.

Because of some content overlap it has proven possible to run this course and the CIEH Basic Health & Safety at Work Certificate as a two day course.

COURSE CONTENT
The course is designed to provide delegates with an overall knowledge with particular reference to relevant legislation and the principles of risk assessment. Different techniques of risk assessment will be outlined and delegates will have an opportunity to practice with both a numerical and a subjective method.

The basic provisions of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 will be reviewed with particular reference to the concept of 'reasonably practicable'. The need for risk assessments will be considered and the requirements of the Management of Health and Safety Regulations 1999 detailed. An overview of other regulations (COSHH, electricity, and the "six-pack") will be included.

The content will be based upon the official Guidance Notes and the Approved Codes of Practice. Information upon where to receive further advice or training will be included.

CERTIFICATE
Following satisfactory completion of the course delegates are required to undertake an assignment consisting of a report about a risk assessment of a designated workplace. It is expected that this will take between 3 and 6 hours and must be completed within two weeks of the course.

The tutor supplies feedback on the project direct to the candidate.
